Upgrading from ClamXAV 2 to ClamXAV 3

Installing ClamXAV 3

As there are so many technical differences between ClamXAV 2 and 3, it’s not possible to upgrade directly from within ClamXAV 2. You must download and run the installer from our downloads page.

Once it’s downloaded, double click the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

The installer will remove any parts of ClamXAV 2 that it finds on your computer. If, however, you’ve moved ClamXAV.app out of your main Applications folder, then the installer won’t find it and therefore can’t remove it.  In that instance, you should just drag the old one to the trash.

ClamXAV 3 will be installed directly into your main Applications folder.

For illustrated installation instructions, please see our Quick Start guide.

Settings

Many tasks which used to be performed via ClamXAV’s preferences are now presented front-and-centre in the main app. One of the primary benefits of this is that it allows you to specify different settings for each item in your Source List. For example, you can now tailor your Ignored Files setting for each item, or disable auto-quarantine for items where it may be inappropriate. You can even specify a different schedule scan day/time for each item!

Settings Area

It’s also now possible to see, at a glance, when the next scheduled scan is due to take place, and also when the selected item was scanned last.

You can configure these settings by pressing the appropriate buttons (highlighted in red in the screenshot above).

Updating Your Settings

Because of the number of technical differences between ClamXAV 2 and 3, it’s not possible to carry over your preferences from version 2. As such, any external disks which you had previously specified as “never scan” will have to be re-configured. This is as simple as selecting the drive in ClamXAV’s Source List, clicking the Sentry settings button and checking the appropriate option.

You may also want to check what the Ignore settings should look like for each item. If you click the small disclosure triangle in the bottom left of the Ignore Files popup, you’ll see the Advanced Ignore Settings. If you wish to have the same Advanced Ignore Settings between multiple items in your source list, you can simply copy and paste between them.

Configuring ClamXAV Sentry

In ClamXAV 3, Sentry is much more powerful and will actually watch your entire computer by default. If you have specific areas you don’t want to be scanned, you should drag and drop them into the Ignore Files section in the Settings Area for your hard disk.

The Sentry icon is not shown anymore in the menu bar as it has been replaced with the ClamXAV Menu Item.

This performs a similar role but also provides more useful information and additional functions.

Finally, Sentry scans happen so quickly now that the menu item won’t animate unless you are scanning an item from the list on ClamXAV’s main window or Sentry is scanning a disk greater than 500 MB.

If you don’t want ClamXAV scanning a particular disk you when connect it to your Mac, click the Sentry button on the Settings Area above and configure the appropriate option.

Dealing with Infected Items

In previous versions of ClamXAV, the options to delete or quarantine infected items used to be in the toolbar at the top of the window. We’ve now moved these buttons down into the Infection List, so they appear right beside the items they’re going to be acting on. Don’t worry though, you can still select multiple items in the list to perform the same action on them all at once.
