Was I supposed to remove Ver 2?

Postby Jim babcock » Tue 04 Sep 2018 7:40 pm

Hi AL: I was perusing the forum...it dawned on me that I dont recall any action I took to erase Ver 2 from my Hard drive.
I looked at /usr/local/ and found a "clamXav" entry along with a "CLAMXAV3" entry. The latter; /usr/local/CLAMXAV3 content looks normal.

I see: /usr/local/clamXav/ClamXavEngineRemover.pkg installed there along with etc, include, etc etc...

I dont recall any instructions as to removing any Ver2 data ?? ..

Comment?

If you were an early adopter, I don't think the old clamXav scanning engine was removed by the V3 installer. I know it wasn't with the beta builds I tried a week or so before release. The thinking back then was that users might need to quickly revert to V2. That situation may have existed through the first few release versions, but I didn't actually check. So if you installed v3.0 and have used in-app Sparkle controlled updates since then, it's not surprising to find at least some old V2 files will continue to be there. I know they were for me.

Recent release version installers do appear to remove it as evidenced by this part of the preinstall script in v3.0.4:
Code: Select all
# old scanning engine
if [ -d /usr/local/clamXav ]
then
    echo "remove old scanning engine"
   /bin/rm -rf /usr/local/clamXav
fi

So, as long as you are comfortable with V3, then you should feel free to drag /Library/usr/local/clamXav to the trash.

You could also:

- Download and run the current installer from https://www.clamxav.com/downloads/ClamXav_Current.pkg

- Wait for notice that v3.0.5 is available (which should be any day now) and download that installer, instead of using in-app update

- Use the official uninstaller from https://www.clamxav.com/downloads/StandaloneUninstaller.pkg, but that will eliminate V3, so I don't recommend using that unless you believe the installation has been somehow corrupted.
