Yes and thanks for reminding me to change my signature....

There were issues with versions through 3.0.3 which were solved for me with a 3.0.4 beta release yesterday. They involved crashes of the UI Helper Tool and definition update failures. A few could not even get the app to launch without crashing. Developers worked through the weekend to get to where we are today. Most of the responses I've read so far today say that the latest beta took care of their issues and for those few who are still having problems, diagnostics have been requested.

Most of the help desk tickets were problems with the registration system for those who chose to purchase now.

There's a lot of confusion about various update options. Many people have no idea what their V2 registration numbers are, so those have to be researched and sent out.

Quite a few complained about the switch to an annual subscription model, but most understood when it was explained to them.

As expected, 10.6.8 through 10.9.5 users were upset that V3 is not compatible, but when it was explained that they can use a V3 subscription with V2, that seemed satisfactory to most.

Read your options carefully. You don't have to do anything until Oct 31st so plenty of time to wait before testing. You will need to do something on or before Oct 31st in order to take advantage of free use and reduced pricing available to current users. After that date V2 will stop getting definition updates and you will lose your free period and reduced pricing options.

When you do decide to test, be aware that V2 will be erased. It can be reinstalled if you decide you need to stick with it and it shouldn't install at all unless you are running 10.10.x.

There was another pre-release build of v3.0.4 posted this afternoon for a few users. If all goes well we should see a release tomorrow (Tuesday, UK Time).

Added: ClamXAV v3.0.4 (7302) released.

An installation question. Does the upgrade to 3 keep any preferences that still apply from 2? Example, if I do NOT have sentry activated in 2 and then updated to 3, does Sentry start automatically with that new installation, or does it recogize the preferences you had set up before the update??

I don't believe any V2 preferences are utilized. V3 has different preferences, controlled to some extent in different ways and with different defaults, so in my experience I needed to reset all of the ones I wanted to change. Taking a look at my preference file, I see a lot of V2 prefs that are no longer applicable, but are retained, possibly in case you should decide to revert to V2 for some reason.

The Sentry app no longer exists in V3, even though the name is retained to refer to the functions it used to perform. You may have noticed in the Login Items for your user that Sentry has a caution sign next to it, indicating that it cannot find the app. You can safely remove it from the list if it bothers you.

The icon in the menubar is now referred to as the ClamXAV icon an is now launched as the ClamXAV UI Helper app when you boot your computer to manage several functions, included what was formally known as Sentry. You can pause the Sentry function from there, but it cannot be disabled for your boot drive. It runs all the time, monitoring your entire boot drive and any other drives you have chosen to have it monitor (except for Time Machine volumes).

One last followup question. In the near future, I'm going to be moving machines and would like to cut down on unnecessary junk. That said, I want to remove v2 completely before updating to 3. I know I drag to the trash and follow any instructions that come up, but are there any files NOT deleted in that process? I thought I remember some other files that are left over (that are traditionally harmless, I know).

Does the drag to trash remove everything else, or will that only happen with the standalone uninstaller available from clamxav website?
The wording in the FAQ doesn't make it clear if drag and drop into trash will do the same thing..

I've never done a comparison of using all three methods of removing V2, so I can't give you an exact answer, but they are all supposed to do the same thing:
- Drag the app to the Trash, wait a few seconds and follow the instructions.
- Use the uninstaller at the bottom of the FAQ page.
- Install V3.

There will be some files left over. I suspect the preference files will still be there along with registration information. That's done for users who are simply trying to do a clean reinstall of the app without having to re-register and re-set prefs.

I think you have already determined that some log files are left behind.

Re: ClamXav 3

Just bought clamXav version 3 yesterday. Running on Sierra (10.12.6) on a Mac Pro (late 2013 version). I notice that for the Sentry, there doesn't seem to be a way to indicate which folder or folders should be scanned. Also, the little image in the bar at the top of the computer is not animated as it was in version 2. It gets animated if I scan something with the clamXAV app. But, if I pull down the Sentry menu (?) in the bar at the top of the computer, there is an option to "Pause Sentry." So, is the sentry running? If so, is it programmed for the user's folder?
I just read the information on the web page which describes the Settings for ClamXAV version 3. (I have 3.0.7.) I still don't see anything about which folders to have Sentry constantly scan. Does Sentry just check for new files in version 3, whereas in version 2 it scanned a folder or folders?

In ClamXAV version 3, Sentry is much more powerful and will actually watch your entire computer by default. If you have specific areas you don't want to be scanned, you should drag and drop them into the Exclude Files section in the Settings Area for your hard disk.

For best practice it is recommend leaving the default preference settings as they are. If you have changed them then recommend a schedule to get Database Updates and also tick the option for Automatic Database Updates (When ClamXAV starts up)

You should also enable both Sentry options on Advanced tab. This ensures that ClamXAV will continually monitor your computer in the background.

Those options should all already have been selected for you automatically. All of this can be done via ClamXAV's preferences.
Also, the little image in the bar at the top of the computer is not animated as it was in version 2. It gets animated if I scan something with the clamXAV app. But, if I pull down the Sentry menu (?) in the bar at the top of the computer, there is an option to "Pause Sentry."
Sentry logo is not shown anymore as it has been replaced with the ClamXAV menu item.

This performs similar role but also provides more useful information.

Sentry scans happen so quickly now that the menu item won't animate unless you are scanning an item from the list on ClamXAV's main window or Sentry is scanning a disk grater than 500 Mb.

Hopefully that answers all your questions.
