turning off sentry

Postby kehrer1701 » Fri 27 Oct 2017 10:20 pm

If I want to turn of sentry for a few days as I need to install several applications, I can just turn off launch at login and it will stay off until I turn that back on?
I was thinking this was the right way to go so I don't change any of the watches I have set up in the box above (which is basically my home folder).
Is this correct?

First off, I would not ever recommend disabling Sentry to install applications. Sentry's main purpose is to monitor such installations to ensure the installer doesn't include malware. There have been at least three recent instances of commercial software installers being hijacked to include some very severe infections. Transmission contained the KeRanger ransomware, Handbreak with the original Proton.A and just last week Eltima Software's Elmedia Player and Folx infected with Proton.C. Although less severe, most adware comes imbedded in 3rd party software installers obtained from certain distributors as well as a few developers who want to increase the monetization of their software. Sentry isn't going to interfere with any legitimate software installations in any way.

But to answer your question directly, a better solution would be to simply select "Stop Watching" from the ClamXAV Sentry menubar icon. That will turn it off until you you select "Start Watching" again.

thank you...and all good points, which I do usually practice. When I tried using the "stop" fuction, it seemed to restart automatically at restart. Is this what is supposed to happen?
Thank you for the feedback and direction. I'm doing some other troubleshooting on a new macbook air and I wanted to ensure I knew how to stop sentry without changing all the places set up to watch.
