Does ClamXav Scan for Windows' Viruses?

Postby fearvirus » Wed 22 Feb 2017 8:11 pm

I'm thinking of getting Wine or WineBottle in order to run a Windows program. Does ClamXav include scans for Windows' viruses? (I know, supposedly a Windows virus can't infect if someone runs Wine or WineBottle, but I still want to know if ClamXav scans for Windows' viruses.)

Yes, it checks for an order of magnitude more definitions for Windows malware.

Some users have found issues when attempting to scan their Windows Virtual Environment when using something like Parallels or Fusion so I don't recommend that, but it shouldn't be a problem when using it with Wine/WIneBottle emulation.

How about if I bought CrossOver 13 for the Mac, made by CodeWeavers? It's based on Wine and WineBottler. Would ClamXav be able to scan it and any Windows applications for viruses?

I think it should work just fine. I realized I have told other users in the past to avoid it, but that was based on my mistaken impression that Crossover was another Virtual Environment solution.

There have been a few postings here from several years ago that alleged Crossover itself was infected, but for various reasons none of them seemed to have been completely substansiated.

Nothing recently from users one way or another about it's use and Googling didn't give me any reason to doubt it will work.

Well, I do have a problem: I was going to use CrossOver to run FaceGen Artist, available here: http://facegen.com/artist_demo.htm As it turns out, CrossOver won't run it. A tech person trying to help me at CrossOver, wrote: "I downloaded the demo of FaceGen to try in Crossover and while I could get it to install and run FaceGen had constant errors and didn't work. I tried adding some dependencies to get it further but nothing helped. I'd recommend using a full emulator like Parallels, Virtualbox, VMware, or Boot Camp instead and those apps will be able to run FaceGen."
So, a question: If I chose one of these full emulators, which, if any, could I scan with ClamXav for viruses, if any? Or, would it be better to buy a PC and run FaceGen Artist on the PC?

As I think I mentioned earlier, it is not recommended to scan the Windows VM portion of your drive with ClamXav, so you would need to exclude it. ClamXav will still be able to pickup Windows malware that is introduced outside that area, but it's best to install independent Windows A-V scanning software within the Windows environment for best protection there. ClamWin is based on the same scan engine as ClamXav and free.
