Services/Contextual Menu

ClamXav comes with a Finder contextual menu item, and under OS X 10.5 and 10.6, a Services Menu item. What these allow you to do is select a file or handful of files in the Finder and scan them directly from there.

Installation

The installation process is slightly different depending on which version of the operating system you're using, and which of the menus you want to use.

OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard
After dragging ClamXav.app from the downloaded disk image to your hard disk, the only thing left to do is launch ClamXav, and then log out and back in. You do not need to restart your computer, although doing so will also work. This will give you both the Services Menu Item and the Finder Contextual Menu Item.

OS X 10.5, Leopard
To be able to use the Services Menu Item, ClamXav must be dragged into your Applications folder. Launch ClamXav and then log out and back in again, or restart your computer.

To be able to use the Contextual Menu Item, you must drag the file ScanWithClamXav.plugin into your home folder -> Library -> Contextual Menu Items. If the contextual menu items folder does not exist, you will need to create it yourself.

Log out and back in again, or restart your computer.

OS X 10.4, Tiger
To be able to use the Contextual Menu Item, you must drag the file ScanWithClamXav.plugin into your home folder -> Library -> Contextual Menu Items. If the contextual menu items folder does not exist, you will need to create it yourself.

Log out and back in again, or restart your computer.

Unfortunately, the Services Menu Item can not be used with 10.4 Tiger.

Usage

Select one or more files in the Finder and right-click to access the contextual menu item. If you are using 10.6, the item name Scan with ClamXav will appear at the bottom of the menu. If you're using 10.4 or 10.5, Scan with ClamXav will be found inside the "More" submenu.

To use the Services Menu Item, select one or more files in the Finder and then go to the Finder menu -> Services -> Scan with ClamXav, or use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-S.
